Everyone in the United States is entitled to a free credit report every year from the three consumer credit reporting bureaus; Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. You may request your report from all three at the same time or you can do it individually. If you live in Colorado, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey or Vermont you are entitled an additional credit report.
A credit report contains a comprehensive history of your credit information, including all inquiries. A word of caution, requesting your credit report too often will lower your credit score. If you would like more information about credit reports and how your score is calculated, please read our credit score article.
The FACT Act (Fair Credit Reporting Act) was enacted in July 2004 and took effect in December 2004. It was passed to allow people to protect themselves from identify theft by allowing them to view their credit report for free and report any false accounts.
You may request your credit report through mail, phone, or over the Internet. It can take up to two to three weeks to receive your report if you request it through the mail or phone.
